About Southern University and the Southern University Law Center: Civil Rights and Environmental Sustainability

The Southern University and A&M College System has a rich tradition of educating students from under-represented backgrounds and championing both human rights and environmental sustainability. In addition, it is the only historically black university system in America.

The System has a diverse enrollment of more than 12,000 students with locations in Louisiana’s capital city of Baton Rouge as well as in New Orleans and Shreveport. The law school and agricultural and research center are located on the Baton Rouge campus. The System campuses appeal to students with various undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree offerings, and each separate campus has its own identity, each is focused on providing a high-quality education that is both affordable and accessible to all.

The Southern University Law Center’s (SULC) mission and tradition is to “provide access and opportunity to a diverse group of students from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to obtain a high-quality legal education with training in both civil and common law” and to equip a cadre of lawyers with the skills necessary for the practice of law and for positions of leadership in society. The Law Center was founded by the Louisiana State Board of Education in 1946, in response to a lawsuit brought by Charles Hatfield, an African American Louisiana resident who had been denied admission to Louisiana State University’s law school. Since that time, the Law Center’s graduates have included civil rights attorneys, political leaders, and educators who have spread across the U.S. as trailblazers in the legal profession, securing equal rights for others. From the original 1950 graduating class of 5 attorneys, the Law Center’s current enrollment spans to over 900 students. More judges sitting on Louisiana’s trial court benches have graduated from Southern University Law Center than from any of the other 3 law schools in Louisiana.

The Mississippi River and civil rights are not the only things that run deep at Southern University. The campus is located just upriver from a major Exxon-Mobil petroleum plant. In fact, the 85-mile stretch of the Mississippi between New Orleans and Baton Rouge is one of the most important petro-chemical corridors in the U.S. because of the 7-10 chemical and petroleum plants that line it (interspersed with the plantations that are now museums and tourist attractions). Civil rights and environmental justice are and have long been major concerns of both those major companies who provide employment for many Louisiana residents and those who teach, research, and learn at Southern University. Southern University’s Baton Rouge campus and SULC in particular is the perfect location for a conference on Global Corporate Governance: Equity, Sustainability and Entrepreneurship.
